Open-source AI is central to Meta’s strategy. By making AI tools like Llama 3.1 widely accessible, Meta aims to democratize the opportunities that AI offers, allowing more people to innovate and solve problems in their communities. The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants are a testament to this commitment, providing organizations with the resources and support needed to turn their AI-driven ideas into reality.

Targeted Areas for Impact

The Llama 3.1 Impact Grants are focused on addressing key social issues across four primary areas:

Science and Innovation: Organizations are invited to submit proposals that address challenges in climate change, health, accessibility, agriculture, and infrastructure support. This category emphasizes the role of AI in driving scientific breakthroughs and sustainable solutions.

Public Services: This area focuses on improving the delivery of public services, aiding in the translation of government resources, and solving relevant challenges for policymakers. Proposals that enhance resource allocation, address migration issues, or support public sector innovation are particularly relevant.

Education and Skills Development: AI at Meta is looking for proposals that aim to improve learning outcomes, support retraining initiatives, or promote lifelong learning. This area recognizes the critical role of education in empowering individuals and communities to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Funding Details and Opportunities

AI at Meta has allocated substantial funding for the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants, with two main funding streams available:

Regional Track Grant Funds: At least one award per region will be granted to organizations that have participated in a Regional Track Event in 2024. The maximum grant per region is $100,000 USD. These funds are intended to support region-specific initiatives that align with the goals of the Llama 3.1 Impact Grants.

Open Call Grant Funds: Organizations can also apply for Open Call awards, with a maximum grant of $500,000 USD per award. Organizations in the Regional Track may also apply for Open Call awards, allowing for greater flexibility and opportunity.

Both funding streams are intended to support innovative proposals that demonstrate a clear plan for utilizing Llama 3.1 to address social challenges. The number of awards will depend on the quality of the applications received, as assessed by AI at Meta and its partner organizations.
